TN LAWMAKERS APPROVE MAKING LOCAL LAW-ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS DETAIN IMMIGRANTS

The Tennessee House and Senate yesterday passed legislation that would ban so-called “sanctuary cities” and require law enforcement at the state and local levels to hold illegal immigrants for deportation when requested by federal officials – without need for warrants or probable cause. The legislation also threatens to withhold future state economic and community-development funds from localities not complying with the new law. Republican sponsor Representative Jay Reedy said state law enforcement would only act when directed by federal authorities.

The bill now heads to Governor Bill Haslam’s desk for his signature.

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition reportedly called the bill, “one of the most extreme, anti-immigrant proposals currently pending in the country.”
