TWO ACCIDENTS ON I-40 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHUTDOWN ROADWAY FOR HOURS
Two accidents on Interstate 40 in Cumberland County closed the roadway down for several hours Monday night. The first crash happened around 6 PM when a man driving a truck turned onto eastbound I-40 heading westbound and striking a pickup hauling a trailer head-on near mile marker 319. The female driver of the pickup had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life. Both she and the driver of the first truck were airlifted by Lifestar helicopters to UT Medical Center in Knoxville. The patient’s names and the extent of their injuries have not been released. After TDOT closed down that eastbound section of the road, another accident happened around 6:20 in the eastbound lane around mile marker 316 involving a car running beneath the rear of a tractor-trailer rig. No severe injuries were reported in that wreck. Traffic had to be re-directed through Crossville and back onto I-40 East for several hours.
