WHITE COUNTY SHERIFF’S RADIO COMMENTS “QUESTIONABLE” DURING 2-COUNTY FATAL PURSUIT

An incident in White County last year where a man was shot and killed during a pursuit by authorities has raised some serious questions about the use of “deadly force.” NewsChannel 5 obtained video surveillance footage and audio tapes from the patrol cars used in the chase of suspect Michael Dial from DeKalb into White County. Dial, who was driving on a suspended license, was in a pickup truck pulling a loaded-down trailer and failed to stop for deputies while traveling on Highway 111. Authorities say that it was not a high-speed chase, but at one point on the audio, Sheriff Odie Shoupe can be heard giving deputies permission, by radio, to stop Dial using “whatever force necessary.” Dial was then forced off the road and, although he was unarmed, was shot in the head by deputies and killed. Also, Sheriff Shoupe can be heard on audio using crude language about the incident and stating that he “loves this –it, I thrive on it.” In another portion of the recording you can hear Shoupe say he would rather deputies shoot than ‘tear up their cars.” Dial’s widow Robyn is suing Shoupe, White County and others in a lawsuit. District Attorney Bryant Dunaway is standing behind the ruling made on the case, that it was a justified shooting. He told reporters that he had also made the ruling before hearing the audio tapes. Sheriff Shoupe would not comment on the story.
