Authorities say they have arrested and charged a Whitwell High School teacher with statutory rape. Joseph Smith was taken into custody at his home Friday night.  Marion County Director of schools Mark Griffith would not confirm the teacher’s name, but said the School Resource Officer was notified and they contacted the Department of Children’s Services. According to the school website Smith taught carpentry personal finance and career courses, and was a middle school baseball coach.
