DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE REGARDING ROANE COUNTY JAIL EXPANSION
Discussions are ongoing regarding the expansion of the Roane County Jail. A recent meeting of the Jail Study Committee revealed the need to expand, because of continuing overcrowding issues. The 175-bed facility had nearly 260 incarcerated as recently as last week.
A primary reason for this seems to be multiple people each day being booked in for failure to appear in court or for violation of probation warrants.
The plan is to expand the jail in its current location with another 150 beds.
The County Executive recently told commissioners the expansion would not require an increase in any property taxes, as money has been budgeted for the expansion.
