SEMI-TRAILER ROLLS INTO I-40 MEDIAN AFTER BLOWOUT IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY
On May 16, 2026, at approximately 3:57 AM, emergency services responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Interstate 40 Westbound near mile marker 318 in Cumberland County. The incident occurred when a 2015 Volvo tractor-semi-trailer was traveling westbound and experienced a sudden failure of its front left steer tire.
This blowout caused the driver, Christopher Salisbury of South Carolina, to lose control of the commercial vehicle. The semi-trailer veered off the roadway, struck the median’s cable barrier, and subsequently rolled over, coming to a final rest within the median.
Although Mr. Salisbury sustained injuries in the crash, his use of a seatbelt likely mitigated further harm, and authorities have filed no charges against him in connection with the accident.
