BLOUNT COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS AGAINST “JURY DUTY” SCAM

The Blount County Sheriff’s Dept. is warning residents of a “jury duty” scam that is going around the area. Sheriff James Berrong says he has had reports of people receiving the calls from someone posing as an employee of the sheriff’s dept. and demanding money for failure to appear for jury duty. The scammer is using the real name of an employee and calling from 865-745-5699. They say in the message to buy two Kroger Green Dot cash cards in the amount of $450 and $400. They threaten that the recipient of the call will be arrested if they do not comply. Sheriff Berrong says that elderly people are being targeted and that if you should receive a call like this, to hang up. He further states that the sheriff’s dept. will never call anyone with such demands. All leads are being followed in hopes to arrest the scammer.
