CRAB ORCHARD RECEIVES HOUSING REHABILITATION GRANTS

Tennessee Govenor Bill Haslam presented Mayor Emmett Sherrill of the City of Crab Orchard a check for a Community Development Block Grant that will fund housing rehabilitation projects.  Crab Orchard received a total of $525,000, which will be used to renovate or build at least ten homes on Lawton Brown Rd.

“This is just an area that needs some renovation,” said Mayor Sherrill. “We are a very low income community and we are just trying to help the community out by receiving this money.”  Sherrill said the funding will help build at least four stick frame homes, while the rest of the funding will go towards renovations to six other existing homes on the street.

Crab Orchard will not be required to provide a local match.  Allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set through the public meeting process at the local level where community needs are best known. The CDBG program is funded through HUD and administered in Tennessee by the Department of Economic and Community Development. Funds are available for water and sewer improvements and extensions, housing rehabilitation and health and safety projects.
