CUMBERLAND COUNTY HIGH SPEED CHASE ENDS WHEN SUBJECTS JUMP OUT OF MOVING CAR

On November 24, a Cumberland County deputy was patrolling Airport Road when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed toward him. According to the radar unit, the vehicle was traveling at a speed of 70 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. The deputy turned around and activated his emergency lights and sirens. However, the vehicle continued and turned onto Interstate 40 westbound reaching speeds of 132 mph. The driver of the vehicle passed multiple vehicles on the shoulder of the interstate and took the 329 exit ramp (Crab Orchard exit) where he turned right towards HWY 70 East. The driver of the vehicle continued to drive recklessly until slowing down to approximately 35mph. A female passenger inside the vehicle opened the door and jumped out of the moving vehicle onto the highway. The vehicle left the roadway turning down a gravel road where the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran on foot, fleeing from the deputy.

After running 100 yards, the deputy caught up to the driver from the vehicle where he appeared to give up. He was identified as Brett Devaney, of Oakdale. The 25-year-old complained of his ribs hurting and was transported to the Cumberland Medical Center. The passenger of the vehicle, Haley Howard, appeared very upset and hysterical about the incident. There were no charges filed against her.

On November 25, around 12:35 AM, Brett was released from the Emergency room and left on foot.

Approximately two hours later, officers received information that Brett was dropped off at Peavine Holiday Inn Express hotel.

Brett Devaney was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of Evading Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, and Driving on Revoked/Suspended license.
