DRIVING WHILE DRUGGED IS A LEADING FACTOR IN TENNESSEE TRAFFIC FATALITIES

Texting or talking on the phone while driving is no longer a leading cause in Tennessee’s traffic fatalities. Drugged driving is now a leading factor in such deaths climbing 89 percent in the time between 2010 and 2015. Last year, 174 people died in crashes in which a driver either tested positive for drugs or it was determined that drugs contributed to the wreck. In the same time period, deaths attributed to alcohol were 136. The number of drivers who died in accidents and were considered being distracted were at 51. Experts say that they believe the rise in such deaths are due to increased prescription drug abuse. Another factor is that officers have better training in spotting drug-impaired drivers.
