FIRE DESTROYS OVERTON COUNTY HARDWARE STORE

A massive fire yesterday (Friday, September 1, 2017) destroyed a Overton County business. Livingston firefighters initially responded to Winningham True Value Hardware on West Main Street just after the noon hour. Store workers found the fire and went to get an extinguisher. By the time they returned, the fire had grown too much for them to put out, and they evacuated the store. Within minutes, mutual aid was requested from many fire departments in the area including Crossville, Cookeville, Celina, Smithville and county fire departments in Putnam, Fentress, Jackson and Pickett. Up to 100 firefighters worked the blaze. A mandatory evacuation was issued for businesses in the immediate area of the hardware store including Millard Oakley Public Library. Firefighters were on the scene for over seven hours and finally brought the blaze under control. The store and warehouse were a total loss. Crews remained on the scene last night checking for hot spots that may re-ignite. Officials said at least one firefighter received medical treatment after experiencing chest pains while fighting the blaze. A few others were checked out after they overheated in the battle with the fire. No other injuries were reported. A cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. State Representative John Mark Windle issued a statement late yesterday thanking the many fire departments that responded to help put out the blaze.
