INMATES GETTING HURT AFTER JUMPING OFF SECOND LEVEL OF JAIL
The Roane County Sheriff’s Department is addressing an issue regarding inmates jumping off a second story balcony inside the jail. Officials say one inmate leaped off the top rail where some sleep and fell on the concrete floor below between two tables. Since the opening of the new jail in 2009, there have been nearly a dozen incidents involving inmates leaping from the second level to the floor below. The ones injured were treated for injuries at the cost of taxpayers in the county. The sheriff’s office wants to build or install a solution to prevent inmates from jumping, but so far nothing seems to fit their needs as a fence or barrier could obstruct views from security cameras.
