In response to the detection of chronic wasting disease in 10 white-tailed deer killed in Tennessee, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has issued restrictions on the transport of deer into the commonwealth from the Volunteer State.

A KDFWR press release says deer may only be transported into Kentucky from Tennessee after removal of the brain and spinal column.

This measure is an effort to curb the spread of the disease and protect Kentucky’s elk and deer populations.

There is no treatment or vaccine for chronic wasting disease, which attacks the nervous systems of deer and elk, resulting in death.

The KDFWR states there is no evidence the disease poses any risk to humans or pets.
