METRO COUNCIL PASSES DECRIMINALIZATION OF SMALL AMOUNTS OF MARIJUANA

Officials in Nashville have passed a bill that would decriminalize small amounts, defined as half an ounce or less, on its’ third and final reading. It would still be up to the investigating officer’s discretion on whether to issue a $50 fine or criminal charge. Mayor Megan Berry says that the resolution is a step forward in a “positive manner” that addresses the “overly punitive treatment of pot possession.” The legislation is also aimed at its’ impact on low-income and minorities.
