MORE LEGISLATION CONCERNING CARRYING FIREARMS ADDRESSED

Legislation that would abolish jail time for carrying a handgun in public without a state-issued permit has advanced in a House subcommittee. Included in the resolution is that a violation would remain a misdemeanor crime but would be punishable by a first-time fine of $100 and $200 for the second offense. The House Civil Justice Subcommittee advanced the measure on a voice vote on Wednesday. A proposed bill that would require background checks for private gun sales was rejected and a proposal to allow part-time faculty and staff to be armed on the campuses of public colleges was withdrawn.
