It took a Hamilton County jury less that one hour today to convict a man in the stabbing death of a former Cumberland County woman. Tyrone Murphy, age 58, was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2017 death of Elizabeth Ashley Cates. Judge Barry Steelman immediately sentenced Murphy to life in prison. Cates, who was 30 at the time, was stabbed more than 15 times by Murphy at a residence on the 1500 block of Bailey Avenue in Chattanooga.
