OLIVER SPRINGS CITY COUNCIL TALKS LIQUOR-BY-THE-DRINK REFERENDUM

The Oliver Springs City Council talked liquor at Wednesday night’s meeting. City Mayor Cecil Crowe reminded the council of the fact that a referendum on November’s ballot is for those residents of the city to decide whether or not to allow on-site liquor consumption, commonly known as liquor-by-the-drink sales. Crowe stated that the Oliver Springs Food City allegedly led the petition for signatures in getting the referendum on the ballot in order to lead the way for a referendum to be added in a future election allowing wine sales in grocery stores. Most cities in Roane County have already passed such a referendum. State law mandates that before that happens the liquor-by-the-drink law must first be in place. Mayor Crowe said that he was bringing the matter up because he wanted the public to know that it was not the council that drove the referendum. Meanwhile in Fentress County, Tennessee Pastors held a meeting Thursday night against the liquor-by-the-drink referendum appearing on that county’s November ballot. The City of Rocky Top has a similar referendum on the ballot.
