SIGNS TO LOOK FOR IN HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 600 people in the U.S. are killed by extreme heat every year. It’s important to know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of water.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Cold and clammy skin
  • Weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fainting

If someone experiences heat exhaustion, immediately move them to a cool place, have them take a cool bath, and sip water.

Heat stroke is more serious and requires immediate medical attention.

Heat stroke symptoms include:

  • A temperature of 103 or higher
  • Hot and dry skin
  • A fast, strong pulse
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Losing consciousness

Very high body temperatures can damage the brain or other vital organs.
