STALANS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE IN OFFICER’S DEATH

The suspect who shot and killed Maryville Police Officer Kenny Moats will be charged with criminal homicide along with four counts of aggravated assault. Brian Keith Stalans appeared before a judge Monday. The accused was appointed a public defender and a preliminary hear was set for Sept. 15th at 1:30 PM. Bond was set at $1.5 million.  Officer Moats answered a report for a domestic disturbance Thursday at an Alcoa Trail residence where Stalans was fighting with his father and girlfriend. During an exchange of gunfire, Stalans shot Moats in the neck, above his bullet proof vest. The officer later died at the hospital. It has also been suggested that Stalans “set” the officer up, because he blamed a family member and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office for his troubles. The suspect had an active Order of Protection against him in Sullivan County and he had been determined “a dangerous individual” by authorities. Family members of Officer Moats will receive friends today from 4-7 PM at Sevier Heights Baptist Church. A private service will be conducted Wednesday.
