STATE COURT REQUESTED TO SET EXECUTION DATE OF MORGAN COUNTY INMATE

The Tennessee Supreme Court has been requested to set execution dates in eight capital cases, and one of them took place in Morgan County. The state current uses death by lethal injection but officials say the ability to get the lethal injection chemicals will be an issue after June 1, 2018. Court officials say Nicholas Todd Sutton was convicted in 1986 in Morgan County for the stabbing death of Carl Estep. Reports say Sutton stabbed Estep 38 times in the attack. Both were inmates in the Morgan County Regional Correctional Complex at the time of the murder. Sutton was soon after sentenced to death for the crime. Sutton has a long history of criminal activities. In 1980, at the age of 18, Sutton was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his grandmother. Fifty-eight-year-old Dorothy Sutton was severely beaten, wrapped in a sheet tied with tire chains and a cinder block, and then thrown into the Nolichucky River in East Tennessee in December 1979. She reportedly died of drowning. Sutton had beaten her with a piece of firewood. Sutton was originally scheduled for execution on November 17, 2015 but was put off during the challenge of the lethal injection process. The state is requesting that the Tennessee Supreme Court set the executions in these eight cases, including Suttons for dates before June 1.
