THURSDAY IS WORLD PREMATURITY DAY

Today is World Prematurity Day. Supporters are wearing purple to bring awareness to the fact that one in 10 babies will be premature. Research from the March of Dimes says that eight babies are born prematurely in Tennessee each week. The state received a “D” for having a premature birth rate of 11 percent. Shelby County had one of the highest preterm birth rates in the state at 12.5 percent  in 2014 and received a “F.” Knox County received a “D” for having a rate of 10.4 percent in 2014. According to the organization, premature birth is the number one killer of infants in the country and the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 around the world.
