TWRA SEEKS HELP IN FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT AN ILLEGAL ELK SHOOTING

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is asking the public’s help for information about an elk that was illegally shot over the weekend on the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area.  The incident happened about 30 minutes before sunset in a field on Tower Road on Caryville Mountain. A deer hunter told investigators he was watching a herd of elk grazing when a red Polaris RZR drove up and stopped near an opening between the road and the field. The driver walked through a small gap in the woods and shot one of the elk. The witness said he identified himself to the shooter, who got back into his ATV and drove off toward Caryville.  After the witness contacted TWRA, wildlife officers responded to the area and found a young bull elk that had been shot in the neck.  The shooter was described as a heavy set white male, approximately 5’8” and wearing a blaze orange vest and hat. Anyone with information should contact TWRA’s poaching hotline at 800-831-1174.
