BELL ALLEGEDLY CONFESSES TO RAPE AND MURDER OF ELDERLY WOMAN

Through investigative efforts by the Somerset, Kentucky Police Department Criminal Investigation Division, the Pulaski County, Kentucky Major Crimes Task Force, the Dandridge, Tennessee Police Department and Cocke County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office, Dwight Mitchell Bell was located in Dandridge, Tennessee. Bell was arrested on a warrant obtained by Somerset Police for the theft of 70-year-old Ruthie Carolyn New’s automobile. While Bell was detained in Dandridge, Somerset police detectives conducted an interview with Bell in which Bell allegedly confessed to the rape and murder of New. As a result, detectives obtained a warrant of arrest for Bell on the charges of first-degree murder and robbery. Bell waived his extradition and was transported back to Somerset, Kentucky today by officers of the Somerset Police Department. The warrant for murder and robbery as well as charges stemming from a New Castle, Indiana warrant were served in the past hour today (5:17pm Wednesday, September 13, 2017) at the Pulaski County Detention Center. Bell is being held with no bond.
