BRADLEY COUNTY JAIL ISSUE OVER PRISONER INTAKE IS ALLEGEDLY SETTING ARRESTED SUBJECTS FREE

An ongoing dispute between the Cleveland, Tennessee Police Department and the Bradley County Sheriff’s Department is causing a variety of problems. Cleveland police arrested a man recently for violation of probation on a burglary conviction. When officers got the man to the Bradley County jail, police were reportedly told the jail would not accept him. Officers then had no choice but to set the arrested man free.

Authorities recently arrested Thomas Creek Jr. on warrants for theft, shoplifting and possession of drugs. The same instance happened when Creek was taken to the Bradley County jail and Creek had to be released. His body was found a short time later in a remote area of Polk County.

Late last month, jailers at the Bradley County jail refused to admit a man arrested on a felon charge. A bodycam video of the officer that transported the inmate clearly shows the officer making several attempts to get the inmate into the jail but was refused.

On March 28, 2017, jailers turned away a man with a cut on his arm brought in on a felony warrant. Bodycam video shows officers made several attempts to turn the man over for booking before uncuffing him and setting him free right in the jail’s sally port.

According to state law, jailers must accept anyone who has been arrested and are responsible for providing medical care, either by the jail’s medical staff or at a hospital.

A clear reason for the dispute between the Cleveland Police Department and the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office was not revealed but based on one of the the bodycam videos, its regarding who is responsible for medical care of prisoners brought to the jail.
