COMPANY IN CROSSVILLE TOLD NOT TO TRANSPORT EXPLOSIVES BY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Department of Transportation has told a trucking company in Crossville to stop transporting Class 1 explosives and other hazardous materials after a federal investigation found the company was endangering the public. Officials with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) says a Rock City Stone and Farm company truck was inspected by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on March 23, 2018 in Dunlap, Tennessee. Troopers reportedly found a ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture, electric detonators, blasting caps and detonating cords on board the truck. The FMCSA says the detonators and detonating cord were found in the cab of the truck in an unlabeled cardboard box, and the explosives were kept near metal pipes and work tools inside a toolbox. Troopers say the company did not place hazardous material placards on the truck, did not prepare an emergency response information vital to an incident that could have taken place and did not prepare shipping papers on the cargo. Troopers added the company’s records show they transported hazardous materials to 44 blasting sites in Tennessee since January 1 without proper placarding or preparation of shipping papers. The owner of Rock City Stone and Farm told 105.7 News this afternoon that within 15 hours of getting the order from the transportation department to stop transporting explosives, the company was in full compliance with regulations and is requesting reinstatement. The owner said the issue started from a dispute regarding one of their drivers or possibly pushed by a rival company. The owner added that the company has a perfect safety record. Rock City Stone and Farm is now asking the state to look into the incident because they believe something underhanded was at play during the investigation.
