CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF SAYS REST AREA SHOOTING WAS A “SINGLE ACT”
Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred at a Cumberland County rest area Tuesday afternoon at 4:30. In a press release, Sheriff Casey Cox says 911 Dispatch received the call that a male subject had been shot in the chest at the 324 eastbound rest area on I-40. Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Tennessee Highway Patrol and the TBI responded to the scene. They found 39-year-old Chadwick Ellsworth Barnthouse of Virginia suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest and hand. The interstate was closed down for a time to establish a landing zone for Life Force to land. The victim was then airlifted to UT Medical Center. At first, there were reports of an active shooter running loose in the area, and a description of a male subject was sent out. However a preliminary investigation has proved that the event was a single act and that there was no danger to the public. Law enforcement personnel continue to work together on the investigation.
