An Ohio-based drug distributor is donating in excess of 80,000 doses of naloxone, an overdose antidote, to first responders in Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

Cardinal Health, facing lawsuits linked to the opioid crisis, began distributing the antidote as part of its Opioid Action Program. The distribution begins as reduced funds and high demand have resulted in nationwide shortages of the antidote.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Cardinal Health has started distributing the naloxone it pledged last year as part of its “Opioid Action Program.” It comes as low funds and increased demand have left naloxone in short supply among first responders across the country.

According to The Columbus Dispatch, Dublin-based Cardinal Health has said its initial investment will be $10 million, with the program potentially expanding into other states.

Cardinal is one of several manufacturers facing lawsuits tied to the opioid epidemic. All have denied any wrongdoing.
