FEDERAL LAWSUIT INSTITUTED AGAINST WHITE COUNTY JAIL DISCONTINUED BIRTH CONTROL PROGRAM
According to reports, a law firm from Virginia is expected to file a civil rights lawsuit in federal court against White county and its’ discontinued inmate birth- control program. The suit, filed by Nexus Caridades Attorneys, names the county, Sheriff Odie Shoupe and other county personnel who were involved in the program and states that “officials conspired to violate the constitutional rights of those they determined were “undesireable” by forcing inmates to receive birth control implants or vasectomies in order to be released early from jail.” They say an unnamed female inmate was forced to participate in the program but did not receive the 30-day jail credit she was promised. White County Judge Sam Benningfield signed a standing order instituting the program, created by the state health department, in the jail back in May. The order was rescinded after public outcry. The health dept. said that it never paid for any birth control or sterilization performed at the jail.
