FEMA WARNS AGAINST POST-DISASTER SCAMMERS

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is warning those in East Tennessee who were victims of wildfires and storms to not fall prey to post-disaster scams. Officials say that those who are rebuilding need to make sure that they are dealing with reputable firms or contractors. FEMA offered a few key tips for residents to protect themselves from fraud. Always ask for inspector’s badges or ID. Make sure it is government verified. Another thing victims should watch out for: fraudulent building contractors. When hiring a private contractor, do your research. Only use local contractors with verifiable licenses. Keep an eye out for bogus charities asking for donations. If you feel the need before you give any money away, question the person asking for your money about the charity’s exact name, address, and phone number. You can then contact the charity to verify its legitimacy. FEMA also warns against taking fake offers for federal or state aid. If you receive a phone call, e-mail or general inquiry about your financial status, check it out. FEMA says they will never ask for personal information unless you made the initial call. If you think you or someone else is a victim of a post-disaster scam, contact the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721.
