NO BOND SET FOR SUSPECT IN DEADLY VIRGINIA PROTEST INCIDENT

A Ohio man accused of plowing his car into counter-protesters at a while nationalist rally in Virginia made his first court appearance in Charlottesville General District Court this morning (Monday, August 14, 2017). In a release after his court appearance, the City of Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney wrote that charges are pending against James Alex Fields, Jr. Fields appeared via video conference where he was given a court-appointed attorney. Fields said he could not afford an attorney because he only made $650 every two weeks and identified his employers as Securitas and Ohio Omni. Fields chose Charles Weber from a list of possible court-appointed attorneys. According to court documents, Weber is part of a lawsuit against Charlottesville’s decision to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He was not given a public defender due to a conflict of interest with a relative of someone in the public defender’s office, who was injured in the crash on Saturday. No bond was set for Fields, the court said they wanted him to meet with an attorney first. Another hearing, a control date, was scheduled in court this morning for August 25 at 11 a.m. Fields is charged with second-degree murder and other counts after authorities say he drove into the crowd, fatally injuring one woman and hurting 19 others. Commonwealth Attorney, Dave Chapman, said it is common for the court to designate a control date at which it is not expected that substantive proceedings will occur, but where a more informed decision can be made concerning the scheduling of a preliminary hearing.
