STATE HO– USE VOTES IN FAVOR OF PARTIAL MORATORIUM ON WIND TURBINE PROJECT

It appears that those standing against the creation of a wind turbine energy farm near Crab Orchard have dealt the project a blow. On Thursday, the State House approved a bill to place a partial moratorium on such ventures in the state until July 1st, 2018 until legislation can be drafted that would establish state regulations on such developments. The vote was 85-3. The Knoxville News-Sentinel says, according to bill sponsor Rep. Cameron Sexton, the bill is a “comprise for all stakeholders” which includes Apex Energy Solutions, the company that has proposed the $130 million farm. The situation has been highly controversial in Cumberland County since several opponents surfaced from the surrounding area which includes the neighboring community of Fairfield Glade. Those opposed have taken their battle before the county commission now for several months even though the commission voted not to interfere with the project because it would amount to a zoning issue. Other state officials have opposed the project including Sen. Lamar Alexander and U.S. Rep. Diane Black.
