The Tennessee Attorney General says that the ban on taking “selfies” while in state voting booths, is constitutional. AG Herbert H. Slatery III says that his opinion is that the ban does not violate voter’s free speech rights. He further states that the polling location is not a public forum. The decision centers around the fact that singer Justin Timberlake broke the law when he took a picture of himself while he was voting in Memphis this past year. Slatery went on to comment that the law ensures privacy of the ballot, speed and efficiency of the voting process, and integrity of elections, and prevents disruption and distraction for voters, voter intimidation, and interference and fraud in balloting. It’s been requested that the law be repealed.
