TSSAA BANS SCHOOL PRACTICE WHEN HEAT INDEX IS 104 OR HIGHER

The TSSAA Board of Control has passed a proposal that requires a heat policy for all its member schools. The requirements of the policy include adjustments which must be made for activities depending on the heat index at the location where the activities take place. The TSSAA Heat policy is the minimum standard that member schools must follow. The TSSAA Heat policy will prohibit schools from practicing or competing when the heat index at the location of the activity is in excess of 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

For heat index temperatures of 95 and under, coaches are expected to provide ample amounts of water. That means that water should always be available and athletes should be able to take in as much water as they desire.

In heat index temperatures of 95 to 99 degrees, water must be provided and mandatory water breaks must be taken every 30 minutes for 10 minutes in duration. Coaches should closely watch players for any indication of heat exhaustion. Players should remove their helmets if not involved in contact situations. Coaches are also asked to consider postponing practicing to later in the day and re-check temperatures and humidity levels every 30 minutes to monitor for increased heat index.

In heat index temperatures of 100 to 104, the same applies in the 95 to 99 heat index requirements as well as reducing time outside for practice and if necessary for safety, postpone practice.

Any heat index temperatures of 104 or greater, all outside sports practices will not be done at all. Any inside practices shall not be done unless there is air conditioning available.
