WOMAN EXPECTED TO PLEAD GUILTY IN MONROE COUNTY “BUYING-VOTES” CASE
A woman from Monroe County is expected to plead guilty to buying votes in a federal court in connection with the 2014 race for county sheriff. Betty Jane Best, also known as Betty Hawkins struck a plea-deal with prosecutors when she appears before in U.S. District Court on April 11. The plea to one count of conspiracy to buy votes will dismiss 13 counts of vote-buying in regards to her support of Randy White, a candidate that ran for sheriff in 2014. Both Best and another, Brian Keith Hodge, were indicted and both say they recruited people to vote for White by absentee ballot. The individuals were then paid $20-$40 in cash. White did win the election, however he was later termed ineligible for not have the proper qualifications. Hodge’s case is coming up.
