AMAZON TO PAY OUT 70 MILLION IN IN-APP CHARGES TO CONSUMERS

Online retail giant Amazon has decided to stop it’s appeal of a 2016 ruling which opens the door for the company to pay out over $70 million in in-app charges to consumers.

The agreement to withdraw their appeal made with the Federal Trade Commission surrounded a federal district court ruling in 2016 which found the company billed consumers for unauthorized in-app charges made by children. The court ruled Amazon failed to get consent from parents for purchases children made while using mobile apps such as online games.

The ruling was appealed but the court still required Amazon to offer refunds to customers. The decision by Amazon to withdraw their appeals in the case means more than $70 million in in-app charges made between November 2011 and May 2016 could be eligible for refund.

Amazon is expected to announce soon how they will handle the refund program.
