BILL THAT WOULD LIMIT FOOD STAMPS TO NUTRITIONAL FOOD ONLY PULLED BACK

The Tennessee lawmaker that proposed a bill to limit the use of food stamps to buy only nutritional foods, has pulled the bill. 4th District Rep. Sheila Butt says on her website that “it would take a literal act of Congress” to change the state’s program. Butt says in her research she discovered that Congress created the definition of those foods eligible for those using SNAP benefits in 2008. In her fact-finding, Butt also found that although several states have asked for waivers to make changes in the program over the years, none have ever been granted.
