SUSPECT IN COOKEVILLE BREAK-IN AND KIDNAPPING IN CUSTODY

The subject of an intense manhunt in Cookeville is in custody. 34-year-old Russell Lee Vaughn is the chief suspect in the kidnapping of an elderly woman after he broke into her home, stole her car and took her along with him Wednesday night. Police say that a Good Samaritan, while talking to Vaughn, observed the 74-year-old hostage mouth the words “help me.” She immediately called authorities who began looking for the vehicle. Officers found the hostage later that morning at the Key West Inn where Vaughn had dropped her off. She had not been harmed and explained that Vaughn broke into her home, possibly with a gun, and forced her into the vehicle. Police had the license number of the vehicle and the story was corroborated when they visited the home listed on the car’s registration and found the rear door had been forced open. Police were able to locate the designated vehicle and a short pursuit took place. Vaughn was said to have abandoned the car near Park View Elementary School which was put on lockdown while K-9 officers were used to canvass the area. Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton used social media to keep everyone updated on the situation and around 11:30 Thursday morning, he posted that Vaughn had been located and arrested.
